Tito Vega can guard anybody in the district. Fifteen feet from the basket, he falls apart.
He is a junior guard at Cross County, quick enough to stay in front of anyone, good enough from three to make every team in the league scheme against him. He is also thirty-one percent from the free-throw line. That is not a slump. That is a number that gets circled on scouting reports, with HACK HIM written beside it in red ink, and by his third season every student section in the league knows exactly what to do with it. Wait for the miss. Then start the chant.

Then Coach Davis pulls him aside with something nobody else has offered him, not a pep talk, a plan. And Tito’s people won’t let him stand out there alone: a freshman soccer player who never stops moving, a teammate buried on the bench who keeps showing up anyway, a rival who guards him every possession like it’s personal, and the kid behind the camera who sees everything and says almost nothing.
